Murder accused fled to Portugal after rival drug dealer shot dead in street as children played nearby, court told
A murder accused 'fled to Europe' after taking part in the killing of a dad who was shot dead in broad daylight as children played in the street nearby, a court has heard.
One bullet hit Mr Graham in the shoulder, causing fatal injuries from which he later died in hospital. The man he was with was shot in the leg but 'lived to tell the tale', Richard Pratt KC, prosecuting, said. Cox and Luke Graham were rival drug dealers, court told Mr Graham, the court was told, was a 'son, brother and perhaps above all, a father' who was 'much loved by his family and is missed by them.' Mr Pratt went on to say he was also 'it seems, part of a group which supplied drugs to those who wanted and needed them in that area.'
As the man inside the house 'did as he was told' and made the call, the court heard one of the three men said: ''No funny business or I'll put you one in your leg, just make the phone call." Just over a minute after that, the Caddy van, being driven by the associate and with Mr Graham in the passenger seat, pulled into Birch Street and he got out and walked towards the property.
He told the jury one of the questions they would have to consider was 'what Callum Halpin was doing at that time.' When the three men returned to the Audi, Mr Halpin 'willingly took possession' of the gun from Cox', Mr Pratt said.
