After undergoing surgery that was life-saving but also life-changing, Alice Colgrave agreed to a photo shoot that made her see herself in a new, powerful and positive light.
"I wanted the healthy breast taken off. I didn't like the way I looked or felt with one breast and there was some resistance," she recalled. The elective surgery went ahead and, after recovering, she left hospital."[I] didn't quite question my sexuality, but I felt different within myself," she said.
Bereft of confidence, the mother of five daughters and a son decided to get involved with an initiative by artist Margaret Ambridge, who was photographing more than 100 women for an exhibition called Becoming Invisible. That photograph has won the inaugural Nyland Prize, with a theme of "beauty". "I just sort of said to her how do you feel about actually taking your top off, about this part of your journey?" Ms Ambridge said."These are the moments in these photographs I took that I could see that she had gone into herself and was actually celebrating her own body and her own comfort in her own skin."
"Then your eyes come down and you see the scar and there's that disconnect to like, 'Oh, what is this, what is this image?'"The photo was powerful, but also seemed incredibly raw, and it took Ms Ambridge a year to show it to Ms Colgrave."We probably both cried a bit, but I just see so much beauty in it and just so much comfort in your own skin," she said."My first reaction when I saw the photograph — I was gobsmacked," she said.
