Ali and Steph have both inherited the BRCA2 gene abnormality that increases their risk of ovarian and breast cancer. They will use their experience as motivation to take part in the Wye Valley Macmillan Mighty Hike.
A mother and daughter who both carry a gene that increases their risk of cancer are to take on a Macmillan Mighty Hike to thank the charity for its support. Ali Root from Hackney and her mum Steph have both inherited the BRCA2 gene abnormality that increases their risk of ovarian and breast cancer.
Ali said:"I was heartbroken when mum told me that she had cancer. By mum undergoing the surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes, I was - probably naively - under the assumption that this would mean that she would be fine for the rest of her life.
The pair both have a passion for walking and will be using their experience as motivation to take part in the Wye Valley Macmillan Mighty Hike in September. Macmillan Mighty Hikes are a series of one-day half and full marathon hikes in some of the most beautiful and iconic parts of the UK. The walk includes scenic coastal paths to stunning mountain views but two conveniently close to London are South coast and Thames path walks.
