More than 3,000 state, local governments and Native American tribes have sued companies for allegedly overstating the benefits of opioids while downplaying the risks and contributing to the influx of opioids into their communities. In a landmark opioid case that went to trial, an Oklahoma judge last August ordered Johnson & Johnson to payfor its role in fueling the opioid crisis, a bill that was later reduced to $465 million in November. While a few other cases have resulted in small settlements, a majority of them remain unresolved. Shareholders of many of the companies facing trials have pushed the defendants to reach deals with the states which would cap their liability on the issue.
