Multiple Historic Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs, across the country became victims of campus threats on Thursday.
That included Alabama State University where classes and activities were canceled as a result of the “terroristic threat” directed at the campus, the university said. Thursday afternoon, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency confirmed it is helping with an ongoing investigation into what it called “a swatting email” sent to ASU .
“The email falsely reported an active threat on campus, prompting an immediate and coordinated response from law enforcement,” ALEA said. “After a thorough search and investigation, officials confirmed there was no credible threat to students, faculty, or staff.” ASU President Quinton Ross Jr., said the threat came as the university was preparing to mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. The university said in an earlier statement that campus police and other law enforcement agencies were “actively clearing all buildings on campus.” Students, faculty, and staff who do not live on campus were asked to leave once their building was cleared. The university issued the all clear around 1 p.m. but students who live on campus were directed to shelter in place inside residence halls until further notice. “As we move forward, I ask all of our students, faculty, and staff to remain vigilant,” Ross said. “f you see something, say something. Together, we will continue to stand strong in our purpose as an institution of higher learning.” Neither a suspect nor motive have been identified at this point, but ALEA warned ”that swatting is a serious crime which can place lives in danger, strain emergency resources, and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” The investigation by ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation, ASU Police Department, as well as local and federal law enforcement, is ongoing. Specific details about the nature of the threat have not been released. Anyone with information or concerns is asked to contact ASU campus police at 334-229-4200.“The threats made today against Alabama State University and other HBCUs across the country are deeply disturbing and unacceptable. We are working closely with ASU leadership, their campus police, and state and federal law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, and the broader Hornet community. The protection of ASU’s campus and everyone connected to it is our highest priority. These threats will not shake our resolve or diminish the vital role of HBCUs in our city, our state, and our nation. Montgomery stands in solidarity with Alabama State and with all HBCUs targeted today. We will not be intimidated by fear or hate.”WAVYConservative activist Charlie Kirk dead after being shot at university event; initial persons of interest released4 hikers rescued after suffering ‘debilitating psychedelic mushroom high’ while in mountains ‘I’ll help you with it’: 16-year-old boy dies by suicide after confiding in ChatGPT about his feelings, lawsuit saysBlue Mass celebrated in Mobile in honor of first respondersUniversity of South Alabama honors the victims of 9/11 with yearly stair climb at Hancock Whitney Stadium
