PETALING JAYA: A multifaith group has wished all Muslims blessings, courage and strength during this fasting month of Ramadan as the “new normal” of social distancing is observed by all Malaysians.
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism said that this year's Ramadan was a different experience as Malaysia was still under a movement control order due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Muslims in the country were expected to begin observing Ramadan while practising social distancing, just like how some faiths had to celebrate their religious events this month while staying home, it said. “The Hindus celebrated Tamil New Year, the Sikhs celebrated Vaisakhi and earlier the Taoists observed their Qing Ming festival by paying their respects to their ancestors at home.“Our Muslim friends are also expected to make sacrifices this fasting month as we are all urged to continue maintaining physical distancing.
“Although communal prayers and gatherings in mosques and surau are not allowed, prayers done at home will still be meaningful and efficacious, ” said the consultative body in a statement Friday . It also conveyed its wish for the fight this Ramadan not only be confined to fending off world desires, but also against the Covid-19 disease.
