Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the beloved Disney film The Lion King, stumbles in its attempt to expand the franchise. The film introduces unnecessary backstories for familiar characters, contradicts established lore, and ultimately detracts from Simba's journey.

The Lion King prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King , falls short as an expansion of the beloved Disney franchise. While the 2019 remake of The Lion King, though not a perfect adaptation, was at least working with superior source material, Mufasa feels like an unnecessary and flawed addition to the Lion King universe.

The film attempts to create backstories for familiar characters, but these backstories contradict the established lore of the original 1994 film and ultimately detract from Simba's journey in The Lion King. One of the most glaring issues is the film's portrayal of Mufasa as the first king of the Pride Lands and not of noble birth. This completely undermines the legacy established in the original film, where Mufasa and Simba are implied to come from a long line of royal lions. By introducing Mufasa as a common-born lion who was adopted into the royal family, the film diminishes Simba's own achievements and makes him appear inferior to his father. The 1994 film beautifully conveys the weight of history and legacy with Mufasa's words to Simba: 'The Great Kings of the Past look down on us from those stars,' a legend passed down from generation to generation. In Mufasa: The Lion King, this connection to the past is severed, and the film replaces it with a narrative focused on Mufasa's personal struggles and his adopted brother, Taka, who later becomes Scar. The film also significantly alters the dynamic between Mufasa and Scar. In the original story, Scar is driven by a desire for power and a resentment of his brother. Mufasa: The Lion King attempts to create a more sympathetic Scar by portraying him as a once-good lion who feels betrayed by Mufasa. The catalyst for this betrayal is Sarabi, the lioness whom Taka loves, choosing Mufasa instead. This motivation, while attempting to add depth to Scar's character, feels contrived and unnecessary. The original film's exploration of Scar's ambition and jealousy was far more compelling and served to highlight the tragic consequences of his actions. The attempt to reimagine Scar's backstory ultimately makes him feel less grandiose and more like a victim of circumstance, diminishing his impact as a villain
