Analysis: Based off AG Barr's summary, Special Counsel Mueller's report delivers a political 'gift' to President Trump ahead of the 2020 election.
Even if there are land mines in the report, many voters may skip the nuance and determine that Trump did nothing wrong if he wasn't prosecuted.Get breaking news alerts and special reports. The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.WASHINGTON — The Mueller report, long thought by Democrats to be the key to ousting President Donald Trump, may instead may become a powerful tool for his re-election campaign.
"The Democrats have done something that I never thought was possible: They’ve actually turned Donald Trump into a victim," said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union and a frequent defender of the president on cable television, in a telephone interview. "While this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him," Mueller wrote, according to Barr. It was Barr, in consultation with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who determined that there was not sufficient evidence to establish that Trump obstructed justice.
Congressional Democrats, who are pursuing several other lines of inquiry into various Trump activities, immediately renewed their calls for the full Mueller report to be released publicly. In addition, federal and New York state prosecutors are conducting inquiries that could touch on the president.
