The 25-year-old joined Pirates from the KZN Academy as a youngster but was loaned out to Chippa United where he first tasted topflight football. Speaking during the team's Media Open Day at Rand Stadium, Mthethwa said that he is happy he is playing with experienced players.
"No, I was not worried when they told me that I will be joining Pirates. It was my dream from a young age that I wanted to play for Pirates. You know, its almost every player's dream to play for a big team like Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs. So I was happy that I was given that opportunity. As for playing alongside experienced central defenders in the team, yes, I learn from them but not only them but the whole team.

Mthethwa added that he will always be grateful to Chippa United for giving him the chance for his PSL debut.
"That's where I first played Premier League football and I am grateful for that. Now I want to use what I learnt there here at Pirates. You know Pirates is a big team and I will wait for more minutes to play whenever the coach gives me the chance. I will make sure I give my best every time I play," Mthethwa concluded.
