“Even though she feels like people won’t give her a chance because of her complexion, maybe it will help for people to tell her she sings beautifully, and eventually she might start to realize how beautiful she is on the inside and outside, too.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It’s only an hour into the school day, and Leah is panicking. She’s been working on her anger for weeks, incorporating coping mechanisms and trying her best – but she’s about to lose her cool. She needs help.

The bullying was one of the first issues Ms. Roddy helped Leah navigate, after a group of students, who have treated her poorly in the past, bumped into her in the hall. They ordered her to move, making her feel like she wasn’t worth taking up space. Because of the way they’ve targeted her before, Leah believes their bullying was because of her complexion.

Ms. Roddy asks if she has shared this story with her in-school counselor, Mr. Jessie Jones. But Leah tells her she doesn’t feel comfortable talking to him about these things. Together, they formulate a plan -- Leah will focus on her work. If the teacher continues to treat her in ways she finds unacceptable, they’ll meet with him again and escalate the issue, if necessary. And if she does need extra instruction, Ms. Roddy and Mr. Jones suggest she turn to her two other teachers, whom she trusts. With a path forward for today’s issue, Mr. Jones asks her more questions about her overall mental health and the anger she’s been feeling. But it puts Leah on edge.

That left the program short a third of its funding. And while resources have been found to help in the short term, it isn’t enough to keep the position through the end of Say Yes’ fiscal year – let alone in the years to come. The family support specialists might face layoffs as soon as June if the problem is not solved. That means interventions, such as Ms. Roddy’s work with Leah, would come to an end.
