In celebration for the new season of MaiselTV, we spoke with costume designer Donna Zakowska on dressing for a new decade, Midge’s fashion muses and the importance of pink.
fashion fans have flocked to the series for its intelligent use of colour, late fifties aesthetic, and incredible attention to detail. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
You’ve said in past interviews that Audrey Hepburn inspired Midge’s costumes from season one. Season two was Grace Kelly, and season three had a bit of Marilyn Monroe. Who was your muse for season four?I found myself gravitating towards French movie stars like Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve. Not so much the women themselves but the things they wore and, again, the shapes of that period.
I try to find a colour that captures the mood and momentum of the scene. Instinct is a very big part of this. I often look at the palette of the past colours I have used and then find inspiration in flowers and nature. The subtly of that type of research combined with period magazines like Vogues and Harper’s Bazaars allows me to find colour combinations that are new to me and less predictable.

I can’t help but wonder if the fictional Midge Maisel was influenced by the real-life Mary Ware Dennett or what would happen if they met. From 1915 through the 1930s, Dennett's pioneering battles against U.S. government censorship helped pave the way for the freedom of speech Mrs. Maisel relies on and fights to expand.
