Bob Warren, a 102-year-old World War II C-47 pilot from Shavano Park known as “Mr. Frisco,” died Monday of congestive heart failure.
Warren towed gliders during Operation Market Garden, the disastrous offensive in Holland months after D-Day chronicled in the book and movie “A Bridge Too Far,” and transported more troops when American soldiers crossed the Rhine. His C-47 pulled two gliders in that operation and couldn’t fly faster than 95 mph — barely above stall speed.
But his heart, and reputation, was well north of the Space City. Warren became known as “Mr. Frisco,” living in the town north of Plano, serving 12 years on the City Council and then another 12 or so as the mayor. Warren Sports Complex, a city park with baseball diamonds and soccer fields, is named after him, and the Dallas Cowboys headquarters is located on Warren Parkway.
A widower three times over, he credited his longevity, mental sharpness and ability to hear well to eating oatmeal for breakfast, but he also had a great attitude.
