The ANC in Mpumalanga has urged the provincial government to work hand in hand with the Council for Geoscience in its pilot project to capture and store carbon emitted from coal-powered electricity plants and other industries
The party resolved during its lekgotla held on Monday and Tuesday that the success of the project would ensure the continued use of coal, which was the backbone of the province’s economy.
Currently, Mpumalanga is among the biggest carbon emitters in the world and a massive contributor to the climate crisis because it is host to 12 Eskom power stations and other industries.Studies have already shown that dirty air in the Highveld region contributed to about 2 300 deaths a year and will cost the economy about R42 billion per year starting from 2025.
Coal is still included in the Integrated Resources Plan of 2019. The IRP intends to add 1 500MW of new coal-generated electricity by 2030, even though it supports a diverse energy mix for the country, which includes coal, gas, nuclear, wind, solar and hydro.
