New Scottish Labour MP Michael Shanks was among those abstained on the SNP bill.

New Scottish Labour member Michael Shanks and Shadow Scotland Secretary Ian Murray were among those who did not vote on the bill today.

Linden, who is the SNP's social justice spokesperson, challenged Shanks to vote for the bill when he presented it.The SNP forced a vote after some of its MPs shouted "No" when Commons speaker Lindsay Hoyle asked if MPs were in favour.The bill was then voted down by 33 votes to 22.Some 16 SNP MPs voted for the bill. They were backed by the SDLP, Plaid Cymru, a Green and an independent MP.

Shanks said: "If the SNP are concerned about workers rights, they should start by ending their use of exploitative zero hours contracts to deliver election leaflets. "The SNP is the only major party that wants Scotland to have control over employment powers, which would enable Scotland to introduce a real living wage and boost the rights of millions of workers across Scotland.
