Mpox warning issued two days before elections, after another positive case
The department of health has issued a Mpox warning to the public ahead of the national and provincial elections on Wednesday. , the department urged members of the public who experience suspected symptoms of Mpox to visit their nearest healthcare providers for screening and testing to ensure early diagnosis and effective treatment, preventing further spread of the disease. It can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and a fever. Most people fully recover, but some can become very ill.
The department said stigma and discrimination could prolong a disease outbreak by preventing people from seeking information, testing or care, thus undermining public health efforts. It added that the most commonly detected and circulating influenza subtypes were A pdm09, previously known as"swine flu", followed by influenza B/Victoria and influenza A. "About 8-10% of patients hospitalised for pneumonia and 25% of patients with flu-like illness will test positive for influenza during the flu season in South Africa.
