The 18 were arrested in Gaza province in southern Mozambique as polling was about to open on 15 October after allegations their accreditation was 'false'.
MAPUTO, Mozambique - Mozambique must free 18 voting monitors arrested during last month's disputed election, a group of 30 African and international civil society and rights groups said on Wednesday.
The group, from the opposition New Democracy party, were arrested in the same province where Anastacio Matavele, 58, the head of a local election observation mission, was shot dead days before the election. The groups said the detainees had been denied access to lawyers and "forced to confess to wrongdoing".
Gaza provincial prosecutor's spokesman Luis Vianeque said the 18 were arrested for holding false credentials.
