Violence and looting erupted in Mozambique after the Constitutional Council upheld the victory of the ruling Frelimo party in the October 2024 elections. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda reported 236 acts of violence, resulting in 21 deaths, including two police officers. He stated that 13 civilians and 12 police personnel were injured. Ronda added that 25 vehicles were set ablaze, including two police cars.
Eleven police units and a penitentiary were attacked, leading to the escape of 86 inmates. Protests, primarily by supporters of opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, began immediately following the council's announcement on Monday. Footage on social media showed protesters vandalizing and looting shops in Maputo and Beira, with some city officials reportedly fleeing the latter city
