Rather than focusing on numbers on the scale, a recent study suggests focusing on other health metrics instead. Caroline Messer, MD, describes a recent similar patient encounter.

Clinical Assistant Professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine; Associate Professor, Hofstra School of Medicine, New York, NYAs part of my standard intake, I usually ask patients to inform me of their highest weight , nadir weight, and ideal body weight.

Generally, patients don’t hesitate to answer these basic questions, but last Friday I saw a patient who 6 months prior had looked very surprised when I inquired as to her ideal body weight. She had raised an eyebrow and politely informed me her weight loss journey was not about cosmetics. and sleep apnea. She preferred to skip weigh-ins and didn’t want the stress of trying to reach an arbitrary weight target. While somewhat unusual for my patient population, I couldn’t argue with her logic. -like peptide 1 drug, proper nutrition, and regular exercise, her blood pressure this past Friday had decreased to the normal range , and her cholesterol and blood sugar levels had normalized. In addition, she reported improved sleep quality and that her “husband no longer complains about snoring.” Her weight had decreased from 216 lb to 158 lb. At 5 ft 1 in, she is still considerably overweight. However, she was not interested in further weight loss since her initial goals had been met. on April 2, 2025, suggested this exact same principle — that weight loss programs should consider many factors beyond percent body weight, including improvement in weight-related complications, enhanced quality of life, and better physical and social functioning. The study reviewed 30 trials published between 1992 and 2024. Weight loss goal in these trials ranged from 3% to 10%, but achieved weight loss was typically far lower. However, the authors suggest that patients should not feel like they have “failed” to reach set goals when health outcomes improve. , perhaps we need to reevaluate our targets for obesity management and focus more on improving comorbidities and quality of life.
