A fire in Mountain View leaves more than a half a dozen people without a home

The Anchorage Fire Department said two adults were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation injuries while the cause of the fire that damaged all seven units in the building, remains under investigation.

Excelia Hendrickson, her 6-year-old son and her mother, Christina Sallison, lived at the complex. Hendrickson said she had just picked her son up from elementary school and was a few blocks away when she saw smoke. “And I thought it was coming from down the alley, but then I actually looked and I saw all the black smoke in the sky and I just screamed, ‘can you keep my son please? and I darted,”’ she said. Hendrickson was worried about her mother who, a short time earlier, had indicated she planned to take a nap. “She said she was going to lay down and then she started smelling something and then the alarms started going off,” Hendrickson said.Hendrickson arrived just in time to see her mom leap from a second story window. “I was kind of afraid to jump but I’m glad there was snow, a lot of snow, just landed on there,” Sallison said. “Thank God.” The family was among four people and a dog who spent Wednesday night at a Red Cross Shelter set up at the Fairview Rec Center. As of Thursday, the shelter was still open. “The shelter will stay open until all of those clients have found what their new normal is going to be,” said Kelin Hickey, with the Alaska Red Cross. “So we are going to remain open until all of those clients no longer need our support.” For Hendrickson and her mom, there’s no telling when that will be, or what their new normal will look like.Sled dog dies on Iditarod trail en route to Elim checkpoint, officials sayMan who police say killed former father-in-law and tried to kill ex-wife found dead in woodsPat Pitney emphasizes optimism in final State of the University addressHop to it — the Easter Bunny has arrived at Anchorage’s 5th Avenue Mall
