Some of the group were plucked to safety by helicopter after becoming the latest to get into trouble attempted to reach the 'Trinnacle'

A group of ramblers had to be rescued after becoming lost on a treacherous walking route which has become increasingly popular among Instagrammers keen to take selfies with a spectacular three-pronged gritstone pillar known as the Trinnacle

The drama started at about 6pm on Saturday when the walkers called GMP and the force alerted Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.In a post about the incident on their Facebook page, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said: "After establishing they were ok, but cold, the group were both flown and walked down to the vehicles for a more thorough check; then returned to our base for a brew, biscuits and a warm up.

"Although the Trinnacle Trail may be advertised as one of the best walks in the UK, it must be understood there are some parts that are more than a walk: the section up Birchen Clough past Greenfield Waterfall is a scramble that often requires the use of hands and feet to make progress up the rocky steps; it is not for the faint hearted.

In 2021, Oldham restaurant manager Imran Choudhury has to be rescued after falling 200ft from the Trinnacle. He had broadcast part of the climb on Facebook Live.
