The Mount Vernon School District canceled its first day of school Wednesday after not reaching a contract agreement with the paraeducators union.
Union members voted to authorize a strike and are expected to picket outside the district office on Wednesday.
The MVSD paraeducators voted to authorize a strike and will begin picketing the district office on Aug. 28 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to“Our paraeducators don’t make enough to support themselves, let alone their families. Most of us would agree that one job should be enough, but many of our paras have to work two or even three jobs to make ends meet,” said Freedom Gassoway, who serves as the Mount Vernon Paras Chapter President.
"The union informed us August 22, 2024 of their intent to strike if an agreement was not reached by August 28th. “The paras in our district work tirelessly for the benefit of our students and programs," said Cheryl Thramer, Mount Vernon Education Association president. "They are bus monitors, reading, math, and language tutors, one-on-ones for students with special needs, recess safety monitors, and much more. They change diapers and assist students with profound medical needs. They make sure our students get home safely. As you can imagine, we cannot do school without them.
