Stuart Kettlewell's side were defeated for a second time this season by Stephen Robinson's Saints
Scott Tanser's volleyed goal nine minutes into the second half was enough to earn the Buddies a second 1-0 win over the Steelmen this season, having ousted them from the Viaplay Cup last-16 in August. The sides were very evenly matched in the first half, with Motherwell slightly edging it on the fact that Zach Hemming was the busier goalkeeper. The first half wasn't much to write home about, with the sides pretty much cancelling each other out.
That meant starts for goalkeeper and captain Liam Kelly and winger Blair Spittal, who had been major pre-match doubts. Motherwell were given a bit of a let-off in 14 minutes when Mandron found space on the left and his cross was mis-hit by Conor McMenamin in the middle when a stronger touch almost certainly would have put Saints ahead.
Theo Bair was sent through on the right in 30 minutes and his low angled shot crept just the wrong side of the left post with Hemming at full stretch, as Motherwell threatened.St Mirren took the lead in 54 minutes when Ryan Strain's cross from the right was met on the volley by Tanser and it ripped into the net.
