A recent analysis by Bankrate found that the so-called " Motherhood Penalty " can cost full-time working mothers an average of $1400 in monthly pay. The penalty can also cost those mothers roughly half a million dollars in earnings over 30 years.
"Women are contending with unequal pay from the get go, but once they get married and once they have children, you see that pay gap widen over time," said Bankrate analyst Alex Gailey.Gailey's analysis revealed that single working women earn nearly comparable wages to their single male counterparts. However, this near-parity changes drastically once women have children.
