A mother and two children are in critical condition after they were assaulted in an apartment in Bridgeport during a domestic incident on Wednesday morning, police said. A suspect has been arrested.
Police officers responded to an apartment in the 2400 block of Main Street around 10 a.m. when they received a report that an adult and children had been assaulted. When officers arrived, they detained a man who was walking away from the area and more officers went into the apartment building, where they found a 33-year-old mother and her children, a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old, suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries. The victims were “brutally assaulted,” according to police who described the injuries as blunt-force trauma. Sign up for NBC New York's News Headlines newsletter.The charges are pending.

Bridgeport police said they encourage victims of domestic violence to seek assistance by contacting agencies such as the Center for Family Justice, which provides guidance, assistance, and support to help victims of domestic violence. Bridgeport police said the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence is another agency that victims can contact. There is a 24-hour toll-free hotline.
