The mother of a Nottingham student, Barnaby Webber , believes that systemic failings allowed his killer, Valdo Calocane , to remain free and ultimately take her son's life.
Emma Webber, Barnaby's mother, spoke at a press conference today, stating that 'every single agency failed' in preventing Calocane's deadly rampage. Calocane, who was carrying a rucksack of weapons, stabbed Barnaby and his friend Grace O'Malley-Kumar to death as they walked home from a night out on June 13, 2023. He then stabbed 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates and attempted to murder three pedestrians using Coates' van.
Emma Webber believes that the fear of stigma and bias towards Calocane, who is of Romanian descent, contributed to the agencies' failures. She draws parallels between her son's death and the murder of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old who was also stabbed to death despite pleas for help from police. The mother of Barnaby Webber believes that urgent action is needed to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
'There are many Valdo Calocanes out there,' she warned, 'and if we don't take action, it won't just be university students at risk.
