A 29-year-old woman is in custody, accused of murdering her 14-year-old son. She allegedly beat him with an extension cord for approximately an hour after he failed to complete his chores.
A 29-year-old woman is currently in jail facing suspicion of murder after admitting to police that she physically abused her 14-year-old son, ultimately leading to his death. The woman called 911 around 2:15 p.m. on Thursday from her family's Seattle residence, reporting that her son had become unresponsive while she was disciplining him. According to a Seattle police report, the woman stated that she was using an extension cord to spank her son, and things escalated beyond her control.
She explained to investigators that her son hadn't completed his chores, which angered her, and she told him it was 'butt cutting time.' She ordered him to remove his clothes and proceeded to strike him with the extension cord. The report alleges that the woman admitted to shoving her son against the wall, causing him to strike his head and become limp before falling to the floor. She continued to beat him while he was on the floor, the report states, and even ordered him to stand, which he did, before continuing the assault for approximately an hour. The woman claimed to have stopped the beating when the boy became unresponsive. During a bail hearing on Friday afternoon, the woman declined to appear in court. However, her public defender, Zelena Jones, argued for her release, emphasizing the significant trauma she was experiencing due to the loss of her son. Jones stated that further incarceration would add to her existing trauma and, considering her limited criminal history, cooperation with law enforcement, and limited resources, she should be released. Despite the defense's plea, Judge Jill Klinge sided with prosecutors who requested a $3 million bail. KOMO News is withholding the woman's name for now as formal charges have not yet been filed, although prosecutors anticipate this happening by Tuesday. The victim, known only as J.R. in the police report, has not been publicly identified by the King County Medical Examiner's Office as of Friday's daily report.
