When asked the reasons for considering an EV, 33% cited the lower cost of charging an EV over filling up a gasoline car; 31% said lower lifetime costs; and 28% pointed to lower maintenance costs.in the “definitely” crowd for buying an EV, 61% said the major issue against getting one was where and when they’d be able to charge it; 55% cited vehicle range; and 52% mentioned the cost of buying, owning, and maintaining and EV.

Only 27% of those who’d owned EVs were concerned about battery range, versus 56% of those who were new to EVs. The survey determined that only 7% of Americans have driven an EV in the last twelve months, and that makes a difference, since 20% of those who would “definitely” buy or lease one have actually driven one. Vehicle impact on the environment is important, cited by 61%, but electricity isn’t the only choice. If the cost per gallon was the same as with traditional fuels, 67% of them would opt for low-carbon fuels – which can include ethanol, biodiesel, hydrogen, liquified natural gas, or propane – if they could be used in their current vehicles without modifying them.
