The mosque had been operating without building and use permits, borough officials say.
A mosque closed by a court order in February remains shuttered while its leaders and local officials work on a solution to address zoning violations.
The facility opened in September of 2021 in an existing building that had held a business office, but no building or use permits were applied for, according to borough officials. The mosque has been fined $692,000 since then for noncompliance. In that time, officials of the mosque also began construction on two additional structures on the property, according to the borough.
Borough Business Administrator Glenn Skarzynski said Sayreville is also working to be “good neighbors” to the mosque, but the center must be in compliance with zoning laws. Skarzynski said the mosque has begun to address the zoning issues. Toto had previously ruled the facility can not reopen without court approval.
