Jeremy Slater confirmed that Liu Kang’s story is far from over, even after the shocking events of “Mortal Kombat II. ” Speaking with, the writer said the team always planned to bring the character back in some form for the third movie.
Fans of the video games already know Liu Kang eventually transforms into the powerful Fire God version of himself, and Slater hinted that the storyline is now coming to theaters. Slater explained that Liu Kang’s fate was designed to surprise hardcore fans.
“We always knew that we would be bringing Liu Kang back in some regard in the third movie,” he said. He also revealed the filmmakers intentionally left a mystery around whether the character truly died or “ascended to some other plane. ” The writer also opened up about killing off Cole Young early in Mortal Kombat II. According to Slater, longtime fans wanted the movies to focus more heavily on classic game characters instead of original additions.
He compared the situation to adding Bob into an Avengers movie beside icons like Iron Man and Captain America. Still, he teased that actor Lewis Tan could return because “death is never permanent in the Mortal Kombat universe. ” The franchise itself has had an uneven but passionate fan following for decades.
