The duo addressed possible criticism of their decision to speak to Trump, saying there is no reason not to share their ideas with the president-elect.
WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 12: MSNBC 'Morning Joe' hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are interviewed by philanthropist and financier David Rubenstein during a Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics event in the McGowan Theater at the National Archives July 12, 2017 in Washington, DC.
The hosts began their explanation Monday by revisiting their on-air comments about Trump’s cabinet selections, noting how they called last week for a chance to speak with the president-elect. That led to a meeting with Trump over the weekend, the hosts said, which was their first meeting with him in seven years.
“For those asking why we would go speak to the president-elect during such fraught times, especially between us, I guess I would ask back ‘why wouldn’t we?’” Brzezinski added. “Joe and I realized its time to do something different and that starts with, not only talking about Donald Trump, but also talking with him.”
“When I say top Democrats, I mean top Democrats,” Scarborough said. “They said ‘listen, we are open to working with the incoming president if the incoming president is open to working with us.’”
