Nearly every Melbourne suburb recorded a rise in rents over the last year, but some soared higher than their neighbours.
Morgane Rouvreau would rather give up her Melbourne lifestyle and buy a house in regional Victoria than continue forking out for rent rises.
House rents rose in nearly all suburbs except Sorrento, Blairgowrie and Safety Beach on the Mornington Peninsula. Tenants in other middle suburbs are feeling the pinch. In Melbourne’s inner east, Box Hill and Burwood unit rents increased by 25 per cent to a median of $550 and $450, respectively, while units in Broadmeadows in Melbourne’s north increased 25.7 per cent to $440.
Powell said rising rents have forced some tenants to relocate or sacrifice extra bedrooms and outdoor space, while others, like Rouvreau, have fast-tracked their decision to buy.about unfair rent rises over the last year. CEO Jennifer Beveridge said many renters ask how to break their lease because they cannot afford the increase.
