More Warnings on Security, Humanitarian Situation in DR Congo DRC Uganda

to the Democratic Republic of Congo has warned the Security Council that the situation in eastern Congo has become"increasingly dramatic".and the persistent activism of other armed groups, including the ADF, Zaire and CODECO, to name a few, continue to inflict intolerable suffering on the civilian population," the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the DRC, Bintou Keita, told the 15-member Council.

Keita, who is also the head of the UN Mission in the DRC , pointed out that in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, hundreds of thousands of people have fled abuses by armed groups and clashes between the and the Armed Forces of the DRC but also between CODECO and militants from the Zaire group - which have clashed often over the control of gold mines in the region.UN News, 29 March 2023

A religious site near Kananga airport was the scene of atrocities in September 2016; two top Congolese police and army officers are on trial for their alleged role in the violence. On the nights of September 23 and 24, 2016, members of the Congolese National Police and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), who had gone in pursuit of the militiamen, broke down the doors of the religious site one by one. According to the prosecution, they raped, several dozen women and killed at least 11 people. Witnesses also reported that men were abducted and taken to the Kananga military academy camp, commonly known as the "EFO camp". The trial is being held in Kinshasa, the seat of the High Military Court, which is the only court that can try generals.
