One local psychologist is reminding us about Seasonal Affective Disorder.

"They can kind of get caught up in that and think that they're the only person who has this problem or that problem," said Dr. David Diaz, associate professor of clinical psychology at Indiana University School of Medicine.Diaz said it can happen when our daylight is shorter, and we're not getting enough sunlight to help us metabolize our Vitamin D.

Even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, about half of U.S. adults reported measurable levels of loneliness, according to the surgeon general."Loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and even dementia," Diaz said.National Strategy to Advance Social Connection It's designed to bring people together, which experts say can improve community safety, wealth and civic engagement.

Simply put:"If you want a friend, be a friend to somebody else," Diaz said."Quality of life is improved by social contacts." In additional to loneliness, when it comes to battling other symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, Diaz said little changes can make a big difference:Diaz said there are also important conversations to bring up at your doctor's office, like testing your Vitamin D levels. While Diaz said most symptoms of SAD can be broad, like fatigue or carb cravings, others can be severe, like suicidal thoughts in some patients.
