gives Emily Atef’s slow-burn drama even more poignance. The 37-year-old died last January in a skiing accident; here he stars in a shattering story about living with terminal illness and making the most of the limited time given to each of us. It is impossible to watch one of his last films, and its subject of a young life cut short, without projecting real life on to it., it is not Ulliel’s character Mathieu, but Vicky Krieps’ Hélène who is facing her mortality.
Sometimes she mourns, but often she seems to wear it lightly, demurring from solemn discussions about it with friends and family. When she decides to take a solo trip to Norway, Mathieu is nonplussed: wouldn’t she want to be with him?Berlin-born Atef has made five features, as well as directing several episodes of the BBC’s. She is a film-maker of gentle, sensitive style whose naturalistic aesthetic and light- and shade-filled compositions are the stuff of an assured vision.
She offers the ambiguity of Hélène’s feelings, which are understandably turbulent, not only toward the illness itself but toward her husband, who tries to diagnose, pay for, or fix her condition in any way he possibly can, obsessing over the chances of a precarious double-lung transplant.
