The Snowy Mountains town of Cooma has an avenue of honour this week to pay respect to Australians killed in the Vietnam War, ahead of the 50th anniversary of troops' withdrawal.

"We placed 528 flags for each of the men that died as a result of their service in Vietnam," said Jim Johnston, Monaro branch volunteer with Honour Our Fallen. The display of flags in Cooma comes ahead of a nationwide commemorative service on Friday in Canberra to honour the final withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam and the 60 years since they first arrived in the country.A local service will also be held in Cooma for those unable to attend the service in the nation's capital.
He said the avenue of honour would also be appreciated among the local community, where many veterans and their families were still processing the trauma of war."I just feel sorry for those who went through such hardship.Cooma resident and Gulf War veteran Geoffrey Stokes visited the Avenue of Honour.
