At least 58 healthcare facilities in KwaZulu-Natal have been ravaged by the floods that swept through the province this week
These clinics and hospitals are in the eThekwini, iLembe, Ugu, uMgungundlovu and King Cetshwayo districts.
“We can confirm that our hospitals and clinics have been seeing a higher number of trauma and emergency patients than usual, particularly in the densely populated districts,” she said.Due to water shortages resulting from damage to critical infrastructure, some hospitals had to send patients elsewhere.
“This includes the inspection of potable water that’s being transported by tankers and to halls where displaced members of the community are being housed,” added Simelane. A thorough assessment of the damage is being conducted. The health department is said to be finalising internal administrative processes to source funding so that the repair work can commence without delay.Simelane said most health facilities were fully functional and providing services to patients.
