Carey Mulligan talks to Vogue about her major Schiaparelli moment at the Met Gala.

creative director, Daniel Roseberry, was asked to design a bespoke Met Gala dress for British actor Carey Mulligan some months ago, his objective became to create haute couture it was possible to fall in love with. “Couture is a very emotional, gestural process,” the Texan-born designer tells. “It’s truly about wooing everyone. That’s the magic of couture. I wanted to keep the dress very much dramatic, but simple.

“Seeing the embroidery in the flesh felt like Christmas morning,” Roseberry says of the gown’s first unveiling in the atelier. Bedecked with 79,000 gold sequins and 38,000 crystals across the bustier and train, the crepe column gown is truly a stop-you-in-your-tracks piece.Roseberry first connected with Carey in early 2021, and mentions he quickly got a sense of theactor’s “innate chicness”, which was easy to channel into the design.

Mulligan is just as enthusiastic about the partnership. “Looking at the work produced by Schiaparelli over the years, I’ve always been struck by how perfectly they blend true artistry and elegance,” the star explains. Gold sculptural Schiaparelli earrings, vintage gold rings and Jimmy Choo heels complete her look, chosen with the help of stylist Nicky Yates. “I feel so lucky to be wearing this dress which, despite the hours and hours of incredibly detailed work, somehow feels effortless to wear.
