More than 200 schools in KZN have four teachers or fewer as state fails to fill vacant posts
This was according to SA Democratic Teachers Union provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza, who told City Press that it was disheartening and frustrating how “the government in KwaZulu-Natal had neglected the education department in its budgeting and in the way it managed its finances”.“It is as if they do not understand this department and they equate it to all other departments, while there are departments whose work is questionable,” said a frustrated Caluza.
Caluza explained that this instruction would be in effect until the provincial government attended to their demands. Sadtu’s counterpart, the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of SA , in KwaZulu-Natal, in agreement with Sadtu, said the department of education is “failing to fulfil its mandate of ensuring that every class has a teacher”.
She said that no one in the province had given those in the education sector information about how schools would be assisted, adding that civil society, the department of basic education and NGOs had to take a stance against “the dire situation”. She added: “This is unacceptable as either other teachers are overburdened with carrying the extra load, or even worse, pupils are not being taught.”
