More than 2,900 people sheltering from floods in Johor

THE number of people seeking shelter from flood waters in Johor continued yesterday, with authorities saying 2,912 were in flood evacuation centres as of 8pm.The state disaster management committee said in a statement, 14 temporary flood relief centres were opened in the districts of Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Mersing and Segamat, bringing the total to 30.
“Segamat is the worst affected with 1,392 people in 13 centres, followed by Kluang where 785 people are in nine centres,” the committee said, adding that in Kota Tinggi 471 people were taking shelter in six centres, while in Mersing 264 people were placed in two centres. Authorities said three roads – Jalan Ladang Siang, Jalan Lok Heng-Sungai Mas and Jalan Perani – in Kota Tinggi were closed, as were Jalan Senai-Gemas and Jalan Jabi-Bukit Tempurung in Segamat.
Meanwhile, data from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage shows that four rivers in Johor have exceeded the danger mark with water levels still rising: Sungai Muar at 19.1m, Sungai Lenik at 7.34m, Sungai Segamat at 37.9m and Sungai Kahang at 15.1m. – Bernama, January 25, 2023.
