More than 2 000 pupils test positive for Covid-19 at Eastern Cape schools
Education MEC Fundile Gade announced on Tuesday that 2 773 pupils and 158 teachers from 308 schools had tested positive for the virus since the start of August. Two teachers and one pupil died from Covid-related complications.Gade said five districts had displayed a concerning increase in the number of cases over the past seven days, namely Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Buffalo City Metro, Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi.
Meth said she was happy with the collaborative efforts between her department and education, which enables the health department to know which schools to find pupils who are 18 years and above. She said that the provincial health department would be going to those schools to ensure that the vaccination programme is successful.
At the time, Eastern Cape education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima told City Press that 512 of the schools had been non-operational since 2012 and the rest since 2016. “It is also critical to ensure that norms and standards funding, as well as the school nutrition programme funds, follow the learners to the receiving schools,” said Gade.Thembani Mtyida, acting deputy director-general of institutional operations management for Eastern Cape education, said the communities of the 20 schools which remain open requested that Gade put the process to close them on hold.
