Rishi Sunak has said asylum seekers will have to share hotel rooms as part of new government measures
Thousands of asylum seekers living in hotel accommodation will be made to share rooms 'where appropriate',The prime minister announced the measure on Tuesday along with the addition of two more ships which will each house hundreds of people awaiting the outcome of their claims.
He said 11,500 new places had been found in existing hotels, suggesting that up to 23,000 asylum seekers - a quarter of the UK total - will no longer have private spaces, depending on room configurations. Attempts to pilot the policy were met with resistance last week when 40 people refused to give up single rooms at a Pimlico hotel and start sleeping four per room.supports HTML5 video'If you're coming here illegally, claiming sanctuary from death, torture or persecution, then you should be willing to share a taxpayer-funded hotel room in central London.'
