Queensland and South Australia have joined NSW in asking to sign up to the federal scheme to compensate volunteer firefighters, while Victoria and Western Australia remain in discussions with the Morrison government.

"Let me be very clear, whether the PM wants this carved in a rock or on parchment paper, however he wants the letter written, Queensland is signing up for this, and he will get his letter today," Mr Crawford said on Monday.

"It is disappointing that Labor in Queensland are reacting this way after the positive discussion the PM had with the Premier on Saturday night," the spokesman said. "We see no reason why her ministers would want to be stirring up trouble and conflict like this, it just doesn’t make any sense."SA Emergency Services Minister Corey Wingard said his government would join the Commonwealth scheme but details were yet to be worked out.
