TSA agents at Logan International Airport detected more firearms at security checkpoints in 2024 compared to the previous year. However, the overall number of firearms discovered at security checkpoints across all eight New England airports decreased. Specifically, 24 firearms were found at Logan in 2024, up from 18 in 2023 but down from 31 in 2022. Of these, 21 were loaded.
Regionally, a total of 48 firearms were detected at New England airports in 2024, a decline from 52 in 2023 and 47 in 2022. Dan Velez, TSA spokesperson for New England, noted that the region consistently has the lowest firearm detection rates compared to other areas in the country. Nationally, the number of firearms detected at TSA checkpoints also decreased from 6,737 in 2023 to 6,678 in 2024. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport had the highest number of firearm discoveries, with 440 firearms detected. Boston Logan ranked 64th among the 277 airports nationwide that reported firearm findings.Velez explained that the firearms typically found in Boston are small caliber, with 9mm being the most prevalent. He stated that bringing larger firearms, such as assault rifles or rifles, is less common due to their size and difficulty of concealment. However, TSA agents do occasionally encounter these types of weapons. Whenever a firearm is detected, TSA agents immediately contact the Massachusetts State Police, who take over the investigation. The subsequent actions taken depend on the passenger and the specific circumstances. Massachusetts State Police will inquire about the passenger's reason for carrying the firearm, assess if it was loaded, and review any criminal history. Based on these factors, passengers may receive a warning, be arrested, or face other legal consequences.Passengers are permitted to transport firearms in their checked baggage as long as they inform their airline about the firearm and adhere to their procedures for secure storage. Between two million and just over four million people traveled through Logan Airport each month in 2024. Over the course of the year, TSA agents screened 33.4 million passengers at all eight New England airports, finding an average of 1.44 firearms per million passengers screened.
