MOSS POINT , Miss. - It’s been almost two years since a tornado ravaged the city of Moss Point. In its hardest hit areas, damage lingers. Monday, the Mississippi Development Authority held a public meeting to discuss its action plan to bring more disaster assistance to seven storm-damaged areas, including Moss Point.
At the start of the year, MDA was notified that Congress allocated a $135 million Community Development Block Grant for disaster recovery assistance in Mississippi. “This allocation won’t even be enough to fill all of those needs, but it goes so far to providing assistance and, really, long-term recovery to these communities,” Charles Bearman explained.“That’s what Congress is really looking at -- what are the long-term recovery needs of those communities and how can we use these dollars to address those needs?” Bearman presented the plan in a public meeting at Moss Point City Hall. It’s the first of seven stops he’s making across the state. “The amount of damage that was done -- we still haven’t been able to fully recover back to where we were, and there’s still a lot of work to do,” said Darius Wilson, the alderman for Ward 2. “We still have a lot of people that are in need.” One of the big takeaways from the presentation, Wilson added, is that the federal dollars will go to people who fell between the cracks during FEMA and insurance payouts, because the barrier to getting this money is a lot lower. “Where people may have thought they didn’t qualify before through FEMA, this is an opportunity to get the ball rolling for them,” he said. “It may not get everything they want, but at least get the process started.”By June 16, it must submit the plans to the U.S. Housing and Urban Development.
