There’s some news about the House of the Dragon season 3 release date that is…less than encouraging.
while praising the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but now with its likely season 3 release date, we are once again in the worst sort of streaming delay loop., showrunner Ryan Condal did not reveal an exact start date for filming, but said it would begin in the first quarter of 2025, so January, February or March, which reflects things some of the cast have hinted at.
Let’s split the difference and say it’s February 2025, which would be a full seven months after season 2 premiered, and a hefty delay to start filming without something like COVID shutdowns as an excuse anymore. Given what we’ve seen in the past, this indicates that it’s going to be a long while until the series gets here. House of the Dragon season 1 premiered in August of 2022. Filming for season 2 then began in April of 2023, with season 2 arriving in June of 2024, 14 months later.
So, extrapolating that out, if the show is now filming in February of 2025, 14 months of filming and post production after that is going to be April 2026. So, even though the show arrived this past June, it’s going to be nearly a two year wait between seasons, a far cry from the early days of Game of Thrones which used to give us a new season every single year without fail. And those were 10 episode seasons, for the first six years! Every June, like clockwork.
There is some good news, however, as HBO is going to start releasing other Game of Thrones-based shows in between seasons as they spool up more and more series. The next one releasing will be A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which should arrive some time in late 2025, even if House of the Dragon season 3 is going to be almost a year after that. Martin is said to really like it, and it’s got great source material.
