The CPW Mopar Spring Fling proves that Chrysler V-8 power is still alive and well.
The year 2024 has turned out to be a huge let-down for fans of Chrysler power, and most poignantly, to adherents of the. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since comedian Jon Reep shouted the words “That thing got a Hemi?” from the window of a Dodge Ram pickup truck.
Dodge was somewhat asleep at the wheel in 1968 when Plymouth introduced its cartel-busting Road Runner; Pontiac’s GTO would no longer have free reign to terrorize the muscle car market. Understandably, Dodge would want in on the action, so Dodge division manager Robert McCurry ordered a Dodge version of the Road Runner called the Super Bee.
At any Mopar show, you will find plenty of Hellcats in attendance, but few will be as nice as this Hellcat-powered 1964 Plymouth Fury—one of our favorite B-Bodies. Starting in 1965, the Plymouth Fury was built on the full-size C-Body platform, so hot-rodders find the smaller and lighter ’64 Furys and Belvederes to be preferrable. This one also features the modern Hellcat Challenger’s beefy six-speed Tremec manual transmission.
We were intrigued by this modified 1970 AMX because of its interesting engine. Owner Mike Batanero was nowhere near his car when we found it and he neglected to fill out any details on his entry form, but we’ll give it a go anyway. We don’t know if the car has its born-with 390 , but it does have an exceptionally rare dual-quad intake manifold—Edelbrock’s STR-11.
