Leading scorer Jaaucklyn Moore drives UIW to first Southland championship, NCAA Tournament berth
Sensing that Incarnate Word guard Jaaucklyn Moore was starting to grapple with doubt, Destiny Jenkins repeatedly told Moore to keep her head up, sometimes nudging her under the chin to make sure she listened.In most late-clock situations through the year, the Cardinals have turned to Moore, the leading scorer in the Southland Conference at 17.5 points per game.
After an unlikely run of four wins in four days as the Southland’s No. 5 seed, UIW will face Howard as two No. 16 seeds clash in a First Four game at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Columbia, S.C. UIW coach Jeff Dow said he was confident the whole way, describing Moore as a player who is wired for tense situations.
Practicing deep 3-pointers since her days at Stevens, Jenkins said she was always taught to stay ready to shoot and to take the chance when it arrives. But at times this season, her ability to play in a game like Sunday’s seemed far from guaranteed.
