In our recent interview, MoonKnight costume designer Meghan Kasperlik shares how she approached Layla's costume, the Easter eggs she included throughout the series, and how the gods would fare against ThorLoveAndThunder's Gorr:
With all the details to dissect Moon Knight season 1 remains the buzziest show on Disney+ over a week after its finale, even as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took the MCU in a more magic-heavy direction. Furthermore, while the latest television series from Marvel Studios kept its canon to itself for the most part, certain events may still be impacted by the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder given the godly status of certain characters.
One of the inspirations is a very, very famous Egyptian dress that is hand beaded -the triangle that's hand beaded, which I showed to someone on my team, and they're like,"Yeah, I can do that!" They took two weeks and they made two of them, because it was not just one color of beads. There was multiple different colors of beads, so that there could be a shimmer. As the camera pans down, it transforms. It was a very long process.
On the legging, there is a little design that you see in tombs, and so we put that on a repeat pattern. I was very fortunate to have an amazing team member named Wilberth Gonzalez, and he hand painted the entire costume. It that started with the leggings, and then the boots; they worked their way up in these gold boots.
Meghan Kasperlik: May Calamawy and her two stunt people were such badass fighters that we only put a soft corset on them when they were harnessed, so that we could cut the holes in the harness. But they fought in those costumes; they did all the fighting and did all the sequences in that costume, and they rocked it. In the post-credits, we finally got the reveal that Jake Lockley has been there the whole time.
Meghan Kasperlik: I would say the Moon Knight costume. I mean, it is the title; it is the show. You always have to get it right for the character, but you also have to get it right for the fans. Because they will notice, and they will see. Meghan Kasperlik: We used the same set; dressed it slightly and changed it up. But with all the zombified people, we had them in a little bit more of the darker tones, so you could really see the dark past of that. Whenever asylums are portrayed, they're always in white. It's always a lighter tone.
Taweret is also my favorite God, because she's just fabulous. But were there any gods from the Pantheon that you would have loved to dress - perhaps in a future season?Any time you can make that kind of amazing specialty costume is [incredible]. Taweret walked around, and her costume was fully functioning on the actress. She could sit; she could do all the action, and she could do everything.
