A newly unveiled image from an upcoming issue of Empire has given Marvel fans a better look at Moon Knight's Egyptian god of the Moon, Khonshu. Voiced by F. Murray Abraham, the deity grants the titular hero his powers at a cost. Moon Knight stars Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke, Gaspard Ulliel, and May Calamaway.
Introduced by Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz as part of Moon Knight's revised origin in Moon Knight #1 in 1980, Khonshu resurrected the recently killed mercenary Marc Spector following a failed assignment in Egypt. Fully healed and gifted with powers such as enhanced strength, endurance, reflexes, and mental capabilities, Spector becomes the Egyptian god's avatar, protecting the innocent and punishing wrongdoers with the abilities Khonshu bestowed upon him.
While Moon Knight's age rating is TV-14, the same as other Marvel series currently released on Disney+, many of the cast and crew involved in the show have teased a different tone than prior releases. With the series featuring a less ornate, more ghastly appearance for Khonshu, and tackling Marc's Disassociative Identity Disorder, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has stated that the series will be a brutal shift from the typical tone seen in most Marvel works.
While much of Moon Knight's promotional material has focused on Spector's inner conflict, EMPIRE's first look at Khonshu has given fans their first look at a unique figure in the current makeup of the MCU. While the franchise is no stranger to pulling inspiration from mythologies and mysticism through Thor, Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch, and the Eternals, their approaches were more grounded, seeking to clearly explain the rules and approaches in a more precise way.
