A Montgomery-born veteran and former firefighter has launched Southlawn Coffee Company, an online specialty-coffee start-up that aims to honor the West Montgomery neighborhood where he grew up and support local programs.

, an online specialty-coffee start-up that aims to honor the West Montgomery neighborhood where he grew up and support local programs. Founded less than a month ago, the company is already marketing itself as a hometown brand and hopes to become the official coffee of Montgomery .

“We’re trying to do something for Montgomery, for the state of Alabama and go global with it. It’s a community niche for our market,” said owner Kenya Vinson. “Southlawn was named after the community I grew up in in West Montgomery, in District 4, so we’re just bringing it home to Montgomery.” Vinson spent 23 years as a firefighter, and he said the long shifts and poor quality station coffee inspired him to launch a higher-end product. “When I was a firefighter, we had to drink it every day. We didn’t have to, but we did drink it every day, and it was some of the worst coffee in the world that we had at the station,” he said. “I used to bring in specialty coffee like I’m selling now — premium specialty coffee that I bought off the shelf, before I got into the coffee business. The guys used to hide my coffee pot, used to hide my coffee and everything like that.” Through Southlawn Coffee, Vinson said he plans to give back to the community. He is looking at funding a school lunch program and providing support for students who cannot afford meals.“We’re hopefully going to move into a coffee shop in the coming year and do some expansion as far as retail,” he said. Vinson also said that when the business expands, Southlawn will offer a blend unique to Montgomery that will be available only in the city. Residents can try Southlawn Coffee for free: the company is offering samples at the Kershaw YMCA during opening hours.Family prays for Christmas miracle as 11-year-old boy fights for his life in ICU
